Notlar Letter regarding copies of Pelly's correspondence on Muscat which Patrick Ryan had forgotten to send to Merewether; and his hopes of catching up with Pelly in Bombay. The letter discusses in detail Merewether's views on the Muscat situation including the rumours that Sayed Salim [Said Salim II bin Thuwaini] murdered his father, questions of whether the Wahabees [Wahhabis] influenced it and the role that Britain could now play in both Muscat and for Majid [Majid bin Said] in Zanzibar. The letter goes on to discuss operations in general in Arabia in 1865-1866 and their purpose in demonstrating Britain's influence and power; the need for another troop of horse to settle matters in neighbouring districts (in India); the lack of naval support in the Western seas from May to November; and news of Hormuzd Rassam, his success in being received by the King (of Abyssinia) and securing the release of the British prisoners there. | 6 folios | more | less
