Notlar Covering letter enclosing letter no.53 of 1852 from Colonel John Taylor, Her Majesty's Consul and the Honourable Company's Agent at Basra, to Kemball, dated 30 October 1852. Taylor's letter is a response to an earlier enquiry by Kemball into the nature of the slave trade in upper Gulf region, specifically around the Euphrates, Basra, and Kuwait. Taylor discusses the observance of the slave trade treaties in the area, the increase in the price of slaves that have resulted from the suppression of the trade, and the means by which slaves are imported into the region. Kemball notes in his covering letter that he intends to send a letter of 'friendly remonstrance' to the Governor of Kuwait, reminding him of Britain's desire to abolish the region's slave traffic. | 5 folios | more | less
