Notlar Correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and notes relating to slavery and the slave trade in the Red Sea, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Persian Gulf. The focus of many of the papers is a memorandum (folios 307-337) on the subject written by George Maxwell, the British representative on the League of Nations Committee of Experts on Slavery. The majority of the correspondence constitutes a discussion of this document, the state of slavery in the region more generally, and the compilation of a brief that may be given to Maxwell for submission to the Committee of Experts.Principal correspondent include officials at the India Office, Foreign Office, Colonial Office, and the Political Residency in the Persian Gulf, as well as Maxwell himself. In addition, reports and opinions are submitted by officials at the Residency in Aden, the British Legation in Jeddah, and the Political Agencies in Bahrain and Kuwait.The volume also contains, often as enclosures, extracts from intelligence reports, treaties in effect in the region, and a copy of the quarterly newspaper, The Slave Market News, July 1935 (folio 145). | 1 file (338 folios) | The file is arranged in chronological order from the back to the front. | Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 340; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. | more | less
