Notlar Letter describing the scenery of his accomodation in Wales and giving news of his family.The letter goes on to discuss conversations Merewether had whilst in London with Lord de Gray and Lord Clarendon about the need for vessels of war in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea.Also mentioned in the letter is Merewether's admiration of the way in which Pelly has handled affairs with the Wahabees [Wahhabis]; rumours that the French are looking to acquire an island at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and that they are prepared to pay for it; and his thoughts on Berenice(the Residency steamer).The letter goes on to discuss the old port of the Ptolomys [Ptolemies] on the Red Sea and its potential for linking up with the Railway; the steam, sailing and travel times from Alexandria to Paris via Brinidisi, Turin and St Michele and the advantages of this being a shorter route than via Marseille; observations on the slowness of the Italian Railways and the political situation in Italy in regards to Venetia and the Austro-Prussian war. | 6 folios | more | less
