Notlar Letter regarding the rebellion of the chiefs and tribes of Beloochistan [Baluchistan] against the Khan of Kelat [Kalāt] (Mir Khudadad Khan), which Jacob believes was intended to place Azad Khan, chief of Kharan on the throne of Kelat. The letter gives Jacob's impressions of Azad Khan, what is known of his background and his involvement with Persia. The letter goes on to discuss the recent movements of the various Beloochistan tribes, in particular those tribes who have taken their cattle and families to the hills in response to the recent rebellion in Kelat. The letter goes on to discuss Jacob's ongoing differences with the Government of India over the protection of the frontiers, and the news that Colonel Melvill has been instructed to show Jacob 'the fundamental principles of which irregular cavalry should be formed'. Jacob also discusses his fears that all his hard work of the last twenty years on the frontier is being deliberately undone by the Government. The letter concludes by discussing the need for William Merewether to return to England for his health and Jacob's desire to retire once the situation in Beloochistan is resolved. | 3 folios | more | less
