Samuel, a schoolmaster in a small town, to Abū l-Ḥasan in the capital (addressed to the Babylonian synagogue), asking him for his indulgence after some unfriendly words had been said to him. The writer describes his hardship, explaining he had to pawn garments to cover the costs of the holidays. He also conveys greetings to Yeḥiʾel ‘the great judge’ (Yeḥiʾel b.
