Notlar Ccorrespondence relating to affairs in the Persian Gulf from colleagues and friends in India and Britain, including Patrick Ryan, Abraham Hojel Nickson and Robert Brown.Other correspondents of note include Hubert Izaak Walton (Director of the Indo-European Telegraph Company), Sir Bartle Frere (Governor of Bombay), and Pelly's brother Saville Marriot Pelly.The correspondence focuses primarily on affairs in Muscat from 1863-1866 discussing the Muscat and Wahabee [Wahhabi] dispute; Syed Thoweynee [Thuwaini bin Said]'s position and attempts by Azzan ben Ghes [Azzan bin Qais] to seize power. Also discussed are developments in the extension of the Telegraph through Persia; Persian attempts to claim Gwadur [Gwadar]; Pelly's journey to Riyadh; and affairs in Bahrain.The correspondence with Abraham Hojel Nickson relates to the creation of two new posts as assistants to the Political Resident and his interest in being appointed either as an assistant or as the Residency Surgeon. Hojel's letters also contain information regarding Pelly's family as his wife Catherine Frances Hojel is the sister of Deborah Elizabeth Pelly and Jane Billings Pelly, the wives of Lewis Pelly's brothers Henry Joseph and Saville Marriot. | 1 file, 29 items (70 folios) | The correspondence has been arranged chronologically using both known and presumed dates for the letters. Those letters that are undated have been placed at the rear of the file. | Foliation: The contents of the file have been foliated using a pencil number enclosed in a circle located in the top right hand corner of the recto of each folio. The folios towards the rear of the file, from folio 59 onwards have been refoliated several times, and the numbers no longer in use have been crossed through. | more | less
