Notlar Private and unofficial letter explaining the lack of information in his accompanying despatch and the reason for his having forwarded a rough copy of his memorandum on the Persian defeat at Merv, which was owing to his horse having rolled on him in a river en route to the Persian Camp. The letter goes on to promise a full report on the political considerations and prospects of Herat and Afghanistan in due course, and to give Sultan Ahmed Khan's likely position and allegiences when the predicted crisis finally occurs at Caubul [Kabul].The letter also refers to M Khamkoff's mission to Herat, and Pelly's concerns over the surveys undertaken by him and how the Russians might use the information gathered; and Mr Alison's recommendations that a Political Agent be appointed to Herat, under the supervision of the Indian Government. | 2 folios | more | less
