Notlar Letter regarding a recent illness which Pelly is recovering from, which had concerned his friends as the symptons had been similar to those of jungle fever, and suggesting he return to England with Aitchison in April to recover. The letter goes on to discuss a proposal by Pelly for a Confidential Clerk and recommending he apply officially for one, stating clearly his reasons for requiring the post, the proposed pay and whether any of it can be met from his own Agency's finances. The letter also discusses affairs in Bikaneer [Bikaner] and the possible need to find someone other than Charles William Burton for the work as it is likely to be difficult and Burton is considered to be too interested in involving himself in the court squabbles there. There is also discussion of Sir Richard Meade's work in Baroda including the arrangement of the evidence in the case and the work in evaluating the report, and that Nawab Faiz Ali Khan will join Pelly once the work in Baroda is complete. The letter concludes by discussing Aitchison's thoughts on Edward Ridley Colbourne Bradford; a new grading scheme for officers being developed by Aitchison; policy on the Court of Vajeels and the need to ensure there are no attempts at forming either a confederation of native states or a parliament of Vakeels. | 4 folios | more | less
