Notlar Court record of an agreement between a husband (Abū l-Ḥasan Solomon b. Manasseh) and his wife (Sitt l-Nasab bat Abū l-Munā) in which he undertakes to settle her in her own domicile. It was previously agreed before the marriage that they would live separately from his female relatives, should Sitt l-Nasab request it. After the marriage the couple tried living with his family, but arguments broke out, and Sitt l-Nasab invoked her right to live separately. Solomon, however, then found himself broken-hearted upon separation from his female relatives, and the couple now agree to once again live under the same roof as his family, but that Sitt l-Nasab will have a separate apartment in the house that Solomon’s mother and sisters will not be allowed to enter. The relatives are also forbidden to request as much as a match from Sitt l-Nasab. The details of this new agreement were negotiated between Solomon and Sitt l-Nasab’s paternal uncle, Abū Alī. Dated Kislev 1430 (= 1119 CE), in Fusṭāṭ. In the hand of Ḥalfon b. Manasseh. Signed by Abraham b. Šemaʿya and Obadiah ha-Kohen b. Mevoraḵ. The same couple also appear in T-S 13J2.20, dated 1445 (= 1134 CE). | Condition: Torn, holes | Layout: 38 lines (recto; verso is blank) | more | less
