Notlar The letter covers various issues and subjects, including:the detention of the Tartarat Bushire;the woollen trade;a missing bale of cloth at Bussora [Basra];a request for charcoal makers to be sent to Bombay with samples, as those from the Bushire region have an excellent reputation;Jervis' admittance into the Bombay council and the order for him to leave before the monsoon;vessels are sent to seek revenge against the Chaub [Banu Ka‘b] for the loss of the Fort William, the Sally, and a Company yacht.Copied below the letter are extracts from those commands of the Court of Directors in London that relate to the Bushire Residency. The first, dated 1 June 1764, covers the following subjects:the wool trade and the encouraging sales at Basra and Bushire, despite the low price fetched;concern over security along the Persian littoral, with remarks about the Arab character;approval of the settlement at Basra;orders that no expensive building should be carried out at Bushire, a rented house is enough;the appointment of John Spencer as second in council at Bombay Castle.A further series of commands is included, dated 22 March 1765:considerable detail about the woollen trade, including sales strategy, the Persian market, Russian imports, the giving of credit to merchants, exchanging cloth for copper, and the standardisation of weights;the grants given to the Company by the Persian government;keeping a guard ship at Bushire;the need to stay out of politics and to keep on good terms with the authorities through the occasional giving of presents;the relationship between the Agency at Basra and the Residency at Bushire;the rank and salary of Company servants at Bushire;who is to succeed Charles Crommelin should he die;sick leave for Company servants;a Deed of Covenants (a contract?) to be signed by all Company employees. | 6 folios | more | less
