Notlar Letter reporting on Sirdar Sultan Ahmed Khan's concerns that Dost Mahomed Khan intends to take Mermenah [Maīmanah] and to invade Herat territory, that he receives secret information through one of his wives who is the daughter of Dost Mahomed Khan, and that he believes the Indian Government to be aware of the Dost's plans. The letter goes on to report on a letter received by the Sirdar from the Wallee of Mermenah which states that Mahomed Afzul Khan is leading troops from Candahar to Shibhergan [Shibirghān] on the Mermenah frontier and requesting immediate aid from Herat, as well as reporting that the Jumsheedee [Jamshidi] tribe are in communication with Mahomed Afzul Khan and that they had offered provisions and troops for an advance on Herat itself. The letter goes on to give Pelly's impression that the best situation for the Indian Government would be a maintenance of the status quo, particularly given the proximity of Mermenah to the Indian frontier, and discussing the difficulties caused by the ever changing situation there. | 2 folios | more | less
