Örnek Metin Jāmi' al-Rumūz: Sharh Mukhtaṣar al-Wiqāya (The collection of symbols: explanation on prevention in matters of guidance) by Shams al-Dīn Muhammad al-Quhustānī (died circa 1546) is a commentary on Mukhtaṣar al-Wiqāya fi Masa'il al-Hidaya (Brief explanation of the book on prevention in matters of guidance to the true path) by Ubayd Allāh ibn Masūd Mahbūbī, who died in 1346--47. Al-Quhustānī was a scholar of the Hanafi Madhab (one of the four Sunni schools of fiqh, or religious jurisprudence) and a mufti in Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan). The work contains two volumes consisting of 46 sections called books. Each book is devoted to a particular area of Muslim life, such as ablution, fasting, the hajj, marriage, punishment, and inheritance. The introduction presents short biographies of the theologians whose names are referred to in the book, in particular the founders of the schools of religious law. The work itself is preceded by a long introduction written, and added for this edition, by Aḥmad ibn Maḥmūd Qāḍī Zādah, himself a Hanafi scholar, in which he expounds on the virtues of the scholars of the four schools of thought. This edition was published in 1880 by the Publishing House of the Emperor's University in Kazan, Russia. Founded by Tsar Alexander I in 1804, Kazan University was the premier center of oriental studies and Islamic publishing in the Russian Empire.
