Notlar This is the first edition of the Gospels printed in Arabic. It was printed at the Typographia Medicea, a printing house established in Rome by Ferdinando de Medici at the request of Pope Gregory XIII for the purpose of spreading Christianity by printing biblical texts and liturgical books in oriental languages. The Typographia Medicea commissioned fonts of oriental type from some of the most important designers of the period, including noted French printer Robert Granjon, who designed this type face for this Arabic edition. The book is illustrated with 149 woodcuts, using 67 repeated blocks. Fourteen of these blocks are signed with monograms of the Florence artist Antonio Tempesta and the block cutter Leonardo Parasole.
