Notlar "The Gift of Vehbi or Vehbî’s Rhyming Dictionary was a highly popular text, used to educate Ottoman children in Persian language, with a method of repetitive repeating and memorizing the text, a didactic routine at the time used by Islamic schools, madrasas, which employed memorizing the Quran as the basics of children’s knowledge. The Western methods of presenting information to students only entered the Ottoman educational system in the second half of the 19th century. The text was written by Sünbülzâde Vehbî (1718 – 1809), an Ottoman author and ambassador to Iran in 1783. It was printed over 50 times between 1798 or 1799 and 1909.The present publication is a commentary on the dictionary, issued a year or two after its first printed edition, made by the same press. It is the 11th book printed by the Mühendishane Press (Engineering Press or also Military Press), founded on the premises of the newly opened Military Engineering School in 1797. The establishment was the direct successor to the first Istanbul press, operated by Ibrahim Müteferrika (est. 1727) and after his death known as Raşid Efendi Press. Until 1802, Mühendishane Press issued 19 titles, which were all sponsored by the state and made for the military and engineering purposes. In 1803, the Press moved in a new location, in a new, neatly constructed complex close to the Selimiye Barracks in Üsküdar, which also gave the institution a new name. Under the new leadership the press received a permission to accept private commissions and to expand their repertoire. Until its closure in 1824, the Üsküdar Press printed 73 titles on various subjects."--Dealer's description.
