Notlar First edition. The only illustrated book produced by the Aldine Press., Believed to be the work of Francesco Colonna, a Dominican monk who lived in Venice. Colonna's name is said to be revealed in the book by an acrostic formed by the first letter of each of the 38 chapters to spell out 'Poliam frater Franciscus Columna peramavit', meaning 'Brother Francesco Colonna loved Polia tremendously'. P. Scapecchi, in Accademie e biblioteche d'Italia 51 (1983) pp. 286-98 and 53 (1985) pp. 68-73, argues that Columna is the dedicatee, and that the author is Fra Eliseo da Treviso., Also ascribed to Leon Battista Alberti by Liane Lefaivre in Leon Battista Alberti's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, 1997., Also ascribed by Maurizio Calvesi to a different Francesco Colonna, ca. 1453-1517, in La "pugna d'amore in sogno" di Francesco Colonna romano, 1996., For further notes and references on the authorship, see CIBN., With (on leaves pi1v-[pi]4v) contributions by Leonardus Crassus (letter addressed to Guido, Duke of Urbino), verses by Johannes Baptista Scytha, and epigrams by Andreas Maro Brixianus., Leonardus Crassus underwrote the cost of the book's printing. See: Gerulaitis, L.V. 'Printing and publishing in fifteenth-century Venice', p. 4., Title from title-page with text in capitals on leaf pi1 recto., Printing privilege below title on title-page (leaf pi1 recto, text in capitals): Cautum est, ne quis in dominio ill. S.V. impune hunc librum queat impprimere., Additional title-page with text in capitals on leaf a1 recto: Poliphili Hypnerotomachia, ubi humana omnia non nisi somnium esse ostendit, atque obiter plurima scitu sanequam digna commemorat., On additional title-page (leaf a1 recto), the final word of line 5 "sanequam" appears to have originally been "saneqve", having "am" stamped in after erasure., Imprint from ISTC., Colophon on final leaf F4 recto: Venetiis Mense decembri. M.ID. in ædibus Aldi Manutii, accuratissime., With 172 woodcuts by an unknown artist, including 11 full-page illustrations, many of an architectural nature. Those on leaves a6 verso and c1 recto are signed with the initial "b". The original woodcut designs have been associated with various artists, although current scholarly opinion favours Benedetto Bordon., Signatures: pi⁴ a-y⁸ z¹⁰ A-E⁸ F⁴., Leaf pi2 of first gathering is numbered but not signed., Leaf C1 is mis-signed E1., Errata on final leaf F4 recto., Verso of final leaf is blank., For reset sheets and variant copies, see Neil Harris in Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 2006, pp. 245-75. See also C. Bühler in Festschrift für Claus Nissen, Wiesbaden, 1973, pp. 36-42., Printed in Roman type., 39 lines to a full page., Without foliation or headlines; with signatures and catchwords., 39 woodcut decorated initials., Text in a highly stylized Italian that is a compound of Latin and Italian; it also includes Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew.
