Notlar In Arabic script., No title-page., Place and date taken from colophon., Karaim (also known as Karaite)--was "the dialect of Turkish used by the Karaite Jews in the Crimea and Turkey ... also [by some] in Lithuania ... In 1816 a MS. of the Karaite O.T. in Hebrew character ... was forwarded to the Russian B.S. at St. Petersburg. The MS. was then sent to be examined by the Scottish missionaries at Astrakhan ... They recast the version of Genesis, rewrote it in Arabic character, and printed an edition ... in order to ascertain whether in this form it could be used by any of the surrounding Turkish tribes." (D. & M.) MS. note in one Bible Society copy indicates that none of the tribes could read it.
