Notlar Holdermann's grammar was the first Turkish grammar printed in Turkey, and the first book printed there in roman letters, with a font cast locally. Relatively few copies were printed, making the grammar one of the rarest items from Muteferrika's press. The eighth of 17 works printed by Ibrahim Müteferrika, "müteferrika" (house steward) to Sultan Ahmed III, and first printer of moveable Arabic type under Islamic auspices. Woodcuts: floral title vignette; large panel Turkish tile-style head-piece at head of dedicatory preface; smaller head- and tail-pieces composed of type ornaments. Engraving: preceding page 3 is a double leaf engraved on [2] pages (verso of first leaf and recto of second leaf) with an alphabetic table displaying the names and shapes of letter forms for French and Turkish alphabets, including the letter forms used in various styles of Turkish writing for different uses (Nesghi for the Koran, Divani for business, Tealik for law and poetry, Kyrma for public registers; Sulus, like capitals, is used for book titles and imperial patents, Jakuti, and Rejani). Text printed in roman and Arabic type; some sections arranged in three columns. Errata: last [2] pages at end. Dedicated to Cardinal de Fleury.
Örnek Metin Turkish grammar in French prepared, according to Watson, by a dragoman of the French Embassy in Constantinople under the direction of the German Jesuit Jean Baptiste Daniel Holdermann. Terminology and structure follow the typical Latin presentation. Turkish material is printed in both the Arabic characters, and in a rough transliteration. According to the preface, the preparation of the matrices and type founding were accomplished at the press of the publisher by workers unfamiliar with the French language.
Ayrıca Şu Başlıklar Altında Fleury, André Hercule de, 1653-1743, dedicatee. İbrahim Müteferrika, 1674?-1745, printer.
