The manuscript is a copy of Risāla by Ibn Abī Zayd al-Qayrawānī, which is one of the earliest Islamic texts that covers what Muslims need to know to fulfil their religious obligations. It is a part of West Africa’s Islamic education curriculum. It is written in Arabic with extensive comments in Ajami to help Mandinka speakers better understand the content. Custodial history: The manuscript was copied by the owner himself with the supervision of his teacher, Kang Ntay Diaby in Diabycounda. Extent and format of original material: 512 pages. Physical characteristics: Unbound manuscript. Headings are in bold and red color. There are several small designs in red ink throughout the manuscript. Red ink is also used to highlight key words.
