The map shows the defense layout of Newport and its environs, Rhode Island, during the American Revolutionary War. It highlights General Rochambeau's main troop camps around Newport as well as the position of Admiral Charles Louis du Ternay's fleet at the entrance to Newport Harbour. This map also shows the field of fire of the French fleet and ground artillery protecting the city and harbor from Brenton Point, Goat Island, and Rose Island. The numbered map legend indicates the forts and artillery surrounding Newport in the area south of Narragansett Bay.
