Bound using an Islamic binding structure inspired by traditional Moroccan binding styles, with leather spine, back, and fore-edge flap. The front cover is paste-paper covered board. In grey cloth clamshell box with plastic clasps; printed paper spine label; lined with yellow paper., Wesleyan copy: Number 26 of the limited, signed edition of 40. In clamshell box, as issued., "Speaking subaltern is artist Jinane Abbadi's response, in words and images, to the Orientalist texts of various European authors written during the colonial occupation of Arab countries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The multiplate chine collé etchings were printed by the artist. The English text was set in Baskerville and printed on Twinrocker handmade paper. The Arabic text was set in Diwani, recomposed by the artist, and printed on Kozo paper that was printed with Smegh. Smegh is a traditional water-based ink made in Morocco from a mixture of charred bull horn and earth pigment sifted to a fine consistency and mixed with water. The mixture is then left to dry until it hardens into usable form. All of the letterpress printing was done by Nelle Martin. Jenny Yoshida Park collaborated on the typography. Lisa Van Pelt bound the book and designed the enclosure. Speaking subaltern was published by Brighon Press, in a limited edition of 40 signed and numbered copies with four additional artists' proofs, in 2018."--Colophon., Excerpts from bell hooks, Marginality as site of resistance (1970) ; The Earl of Cromer, Modern Egypt (1908) ; Flaubert, Flaubert in Egypt (1849) ; de Nerval, Journey to the Orient (1851) ; Jules Ferry, Speech before the French Chamber of Deputies (1884) ; Renan, Sorbonne University (1883) ; Flaubert to Louise Colet (1846) ; Montagnac, Lettres d'un soldat (1843), Bound using an Islamic binding structure inspired by traditional Moroccan binding styles, with leather spine, back, and fore-edge flap.
