It is generally connected with the political systems in the different countries. It should be noted that unlike is often the case in the West, religion in the Arab world is not usually seen as a individual choice. Rather, it is matter of group affiliation: one is born a Muslim, Christian, Jew, Suni or Shiite, and this becomes a bit like one's ethnicity. Religion as a sociolinguistic variable should be understood in this context.
