| Sample Text | Abu Bakr suggested at the gathering that the people should choose either Umar or Abu Ubayd since both were capable members of the Quraysh tribe. Umar immediately grabbed Abu Bakr's hand and gave him the baya (announced his allegiance, an Arab custom) which led to the other people in the gathering also giving the baya. Umar later described that action as a falta, a quick and rash decision. However, this decision would not have been binding on other Muslims if they had not decided to give their baja, which all but Ali's supporters did. Year of publication: 1614/15. |
