Notlar Gold dinar is the gold coin that was adopted and used long before the Islamic era and was later accepted during the time of the Prophet s.a.w. (peace be on him), his companions and the tabiin (the generation of Muslims who were born after the death of the Islamic prophet Muhammad s.a.w.) until it was known as the currency of the Muslims. It continued to be used until the fall of the Ottoman Turkish government in 1924. Whilst the first modern gold dinar was minted in 1992 in Dubai, suggestions to regain its use as a currency mechanism applauded debates after the befall of the currency crisis of the ASEAN countries in 1997/ 98. The call was made by former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. MahathirMohammed in 2001, and recently (January 2012) he raised another issue and proposed for the re-pegging of ringgit to gold. The question here; after more than 10 years after this call was made, has the Malaysian community today accepted the use of gold dinar as a financial instrument or the contrary? Thus, this study aims to analyze the forms of gold dinar applications in Malaysia in its attempt to disclose all current applications of gold dinar practiced in Malaysia after a decade of its proposal. This study is a qualitative form taking the strategic approach of literature review. The results of the study show that there are some applications of gold dinar as a currency i.e. in a physical form and via electronic (an electronic payment system called e-dinar), as a form of investment, savings, payment transaction for pilgrimage purposes, zakat payment, souvenirs, and as a wedding dowry. This study also shows that the use of gold dinar as a currency mechanism has been widely received by parts of the Malaysian society and thus efforts to elevate its use as a currency is true to be realized.
