In recent decades, Austria has experienced remarkable economic development, which has been shaped by both internal reforms and membership in the European Union (EU). From the rubble of World War II to one of the wealthiest EU countries, Austria has undergone an astonishing metamorphosis and emerged as a major player on the global stage. This thesis examines the Austrian economy before and after joining the EU in 1995. The article first provides an overview of the historical and economic conditions in Austria before joining the EU. The challenges that the country faced after the Second World War and the decisive steps towards economic recovery and modernization are examined. In particular, the role of the Marshall Plan and the nationalization of large industrial companies are highlighted. We then focus on the period after joining the EU, during which Austria underwent extensive structural changes. The liberalization of various sectors, the privatization of companies and integration into the common European market are seen as crucial elements of this process. Particular attention is paid to the service sector, especially tourism, trade and banking, which make a significant contribution to the country's economic dynamism. Abstract In recent decades, Austria has undergone remarkable economic development, shaped by both internal reforms and membership in the European Union (EU). From the rubble of the Second World War to becoming one of the wealthiest EU countries, Austria has experienced a remarkable transformation and emerged as a significant player on the global stage. This paper examines the Austrian economy before and after its accession to the EU in 1995. The article begins by providing an overview of Austria's historical and economic conditions prior to EU accession. It explores the challenges faced by the country after World War II, as well as the crucial steps taken towards economic recovery and modernization. In particular, the role of the Marshall Plan and the nationalization of major industrial enterprises are highlighted. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the period following EU accession, during which Austria underwent comprehensive structural changes. The liberalization of various sectors, the privatization of companies, and integration into the common European market are considered pivotal elements of this process. Special attention is given to the services sector, especially tourism, trade, and banking, which make significant contributions to the country's economic dynamism.
