The aim of this article is to analyse the roots of the deviation of Mustapha Sallehs teaching that is found in the district of Marang, Terengganu. The teaching is confirmed as deviant by the District Religious Department of Marang, Terengganu as the religious authority which manages this case. There are two questions for this paper. First question, what is the cause of deviancy comes from the practices of the tarekat Martabat Tujuh Wahdah al-Wujud. Secondly, is it the statements made by Mustapha Salleh are the origins for the deviancy teaching? According to the study and based on the study of documents and interviews, this article concludes that the root of the deviant teaching is solely derived from the Mustapha Salleh statements and not from the tarekat Martabat Tujuh Wahdah al- wujud itself. In specific, Mustapha Salleh claims that Prophet Muhammad SAW as a stupid swindler and solat is not mandatory. Finally, analyses of the statements are made based on the arguments of authentic scholars.
