Notlar Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). She studied in the Faculty of Medicine at Al-Azhar University, followed by studies in anesthesiology and emergency medicine at Ayn Shams University. She was politically active from a young age. At the age of 15 she joined the Youth Organization of the Socialist Union. This activism continued into university, where she was involved in the 1977 popular uprisings (‘bread riots’), for which she was arrested and jailed for a year. After graduating, she worked at a clinic in Bani Sweif, in the Egyptian countryside. In the 1980s, she joined the Tagammu` Party and ran for parliament. She resigned from the party after 5 years. Later she opened her own clinic in Shoubra al-Khaima and in 1993 joined the Al-Nadeem Centre for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture and Violence, where she worked with victims of torture from Egypt and Sudan. She helped to establish the Women’s Programme to help female victims of violence and torture. She also helped conduct a study of violence against women, including wife beating, FGM and early marriages. After 2000, she was involved in other political activities, such as helping to found the Popular Committee in Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which sent supplies to Palestine, the Kefaya movement and Doctors Against Inheritance (referring to the grooming of Gamal Mubarak for the presidency) During the 25 January 2011 uprising, she worked in the field hospitals and clinics, helping victims of state security violence. After the stepping down of Mubarak, she observed the return of state security and an increase in their power. ( en )
