This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a farmer. After graduating secondary school, she got married when she was 19 years old. At the age of 18, she started teaching at a primary school, but after she graduated university she began to teach English literature at a secondary school. There she was promoted to headmistress. Whilst working, May studied for a degree in English literature at the Lebanese University in Beirut, graduating in 1970. She began her public work in the 1990s, when she helped establish the Qurnayel Women's Society, in order to address the lack of social services and welfare for women in her village. Through her voluntary work she cooperated with the Lebanese Women's Council, organizing various events and conferences for women. May also became a member of the National Committee for the Follow Up of Women's Issues after the Beijing Conference on Women in 1995. At the time of the interview, she was the regional coordinator of the National Committee for the Follow Up of Women’s Issues for the Mount Lebanon municipality. ( en )
