Notlar Funding : Women's Activism in the Arab World (2013-2016). This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. Her mother was a housewife and her father was a sales manager for a dairy company. She moved to Jordan with her family in 1981 as her father's job moved there. She studied law at the Amman National University. While there she was active in the movie and theater club. She also supported Fatah for a time at university, and was generally involved in the Palestinian cause. After, she attempted to create a student union for all Jordanian students but this was prevented. She is a member of the Lawyers' Association. At the time of the interview, Hala was working with the Jordanian Women's Union, working on amending the Personal Status Law. She has also continued her pro-Palestine activities, joining the Right to Return Coalition and opposing the normalisation of relations with Israel. At the time of the Arab Spring, she participated in demonstrations in Jordan and in New York while at Columbia University on a grant from BellNet. She remains positive about the various Arab revolutions producing positive outcomes for women and women's rights. At the time of the interview, she was finishing her PhD thesis and looking into post-doctorate and academic work. ( en )
