She went to Cairo University where she graduated from the Faculty of Arts in 1962. She worked as a literary critic, journalist and writer, as well as being politically active since the 1960s. Under Nasser, she was a member of the Arab Socialist Union, where she was on the Committee of 20. At this time she was also a journalist for the Middle East News Agency. After the 1967 war, she moved away from Nasserite politics and toward the ideas of Marxism. In 1968 she joined Al-Gumhuriya newspaper. Later, in 1976, she helped found the National Progressive Unionist Party (Tagammu` Party), as well as the Women’s Progressive Union to which it was affiliated. Farida was a member of the Tagammu` central committee and later the political bureau. As a result of her party membership and opposition to Sadat's economic liberalisation and the Camp David Accords, she was arrested and sent to prison for nearly a year in 1981. After her release, she ran in the 1984 elections in Mansoura for the NPUP. It was also during this time that she became more actively involved in women's issues, seeing them as equally as important as economic issues. At the time of the interview, Farida believed that the 2011 revolution had strengthened the women’s movement in Egypt and the wider Middle East. ( en )
