Her parents both came from a farming background. From the age of 10, Karima was involved in theatre. She entered university in October 1971 and graduated in 1978 in pharmacy, during which time she was very active in the student movement. After graduation, Karima established a small pharmacy and also worked in theatre productions around Egypt, until 2002, when she left the theatre to concentrate on political activism. After 2000, Kairma participated in the Egyptian Popular Committee in Solidarity with the Palestinians and the Cairo International Conference against the US occupation of Iraq. She was one of the founders of the Kefaya Movement for Change in 2004 and the Egyptian National Society for Change in 2010. She was active in the 25 January 2011 uprising and, afterwards, was one of the founders of the Egyptian Socialist Party and one of two female candidates on the party’s list for parliamentary elections in 2011. Karima founded the Egyptian Women's National Front in 2012, a coalition bringing together female political party members, which also was part of the hearing sessions for the writing of the 2014 constitution. Her parents both came from a farming background. From the age of 10, Karima was involved in theatre.
