Her mother was an English teacher and her father was an export manager for car parts. She went to Ayn Shams University where she studied Literature, Philosophy and Sociology. Afterwards, she worked as a high school teacher for two years before attaining a diploma in translation from the American University in Cairo. Her journey into social activism began by working with the Cairo Institute for Human Rights, where she researched issues such as female genital mutilation (or 'cutting') and violence against women. This research led her to the New Woman Foundation, where she worked with Dr. Amal Abdel Hady researching into support for women victims of violence. Before the revolution, her activities in relation to women's issues remained focused on research, and while interested in groups like Kefaya, she didn't become involved in their activities. After the revolution, she became more politically involved, joining the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. However, her focus still remained on social and women's issues, such as violence and human rights. Thus she began to oppose the increasing Islamist influence in the revolution, in particular their attitude towards Egyptian Copts. As of the interview, her attitude toward the revolution had changed to that of pessimism. She believes that those people wanting change need to agree on what change they want and need to learn the lessons of the past, with the take-over of the Muslim Brotherhood and then the army. Ultimately she believes that they have to learn to deal with the army and win the trust of the people. ( en )
