Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a policeman, who was posted to the countryside, where she grew up. Nadia studied medicine at Cairo University, during which time she participated in the student movement of 1972. After graduation, she worked as a doctor in the countryside and, later, was a co-founder of the New Woman study group, which later became the New Woman Foundation. Through her involvement with NWF, Nadia became interested in women’s reproductive health and violence against women, amongst other issues, and lobbying the government to make legal reforms in line with its CEDAW commitments. She was involved in the preparations for the UN International Conference on Population and Development in 1994. She helped launch the New Woman Magazine along with various projects focusing on awareness of women's reproductive health issues. Nadia was also involved with the Health and Environmental Development Association, some other associations concerned with health issues and a member of the Doctors’ Union. She participated in the 25 January 2011 uprising. Following the ousting of Mubarak, Nadia joined the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. At the time of the interview Nadia was elected as head of the women's secretariat and a member of the High Committee, the political office and the executive office, as well as continuing her work with the NWF. Nadia participated in 30 June 2013 protests against former president Morsi. ( en )
