This project, funded by a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship, examines the significance of middle-class women's activism to the geo/politics of Arab countries, from national independence until the Arab uprisings. At the time of the interview, her father was retired and her mother was a housewife. Shaima attended Hilwan University in Egypt, graduating in 2002. At the time of the interview Shaima was in the process of completing a Master's Degree in literary criticism. Although she comes from a family with no history of public or political work, Shaima joined the Nasserist party at the age of 13. After graduation she worked in various temporary jobs. At the time of the interview Shaima was working as an Arabic language school teacher and was the Secretary General of the Independent Teachers' Union in Cairo. She is concerned to improve women's rights and women’s participation within the union and gender equality in the labour market. Shaima participated in the 25 January 2011 uprising and, through this, met other activist teachers and helped to form the Independent Teachers’ Union. Shaima was a coordinator for the largest teachers' strike in Egyptian history in September 2011. She participated in the 30 June demonstrations against Mohammed Morsi. She was also a member of the Arab Women's Network for Women Unionists and was the Egyptian coordinator for the Arab Network for Human Rights and Women's Rights in the Middle East. She was an executive member of the Youth Parliament and worked as a proof reader for a newspaper called El-Ettigah. ( en )
