Notlar - An analysis of the conditions under which the Christians and Jews of Iraq were living at the beginning of the last century proved that they were not subject to any discrimination on the part of the Ottoman authorities. Their connections with their urban Muslim neighbors were generally good and peaceful. Sometimes, especially when the Ottoman state was at war with a European state, the religious feelings became acute among the Muslim mob against all the Christians, including the natives. The plunderers took any such opportunity to steal what they could from their rich and weak Christian and Jewish neighbors. The authorities usually hurried to provide protection to the quarters inhabited by Christian and Jews. The life of rural Christians and Jews in Vilayet of Musil’s country was more difficult. They were subject to oppression by their Muslim Kurd neighbors. This was not due to mere religious fanaticism but was caused also by some coveted objects of greedy aghas of Kurdish tribes. Some great powers then interfered from time to time to protect the Christians and Jews. However, these interferences aimed mainly to serve the interests of these powers and caused some suspicions in minds of the Ottoman authorities and Muslim majority about the faithfulness of these minorities.
