A detailed statistical report by an early American consul in Baghdad allows a rare in depth view of the trade of Karbala Liwa during the late Ottoman empire. The richness of these data add a significant dimension to the otherwise lacunae in micro economic data for an Arabian country during Ottoman times. Analysis shows that the trade of Karbala was restricted to the pettiness of the inhabitants, the location far off the Tigris River, which was the main route of transport, & the homogeneous nature of the agricultural production. Ideally, the Karbala data will allow comparison to the other liwas, which lack such fine grained data. Two factors stand out as unique in sustaining long distance trade there: 1) the heavy influx of pilgrims to visit the sacred tombs, & 2) the Najaf to Najd trade route which passed through Karbala in crossing the vast desert interior. 69 References.
