Notes This research paper aims to study the “Islamic” Ottoman endowment schools in Greece. The study is based on the analysis and extrapolation of many endowment documents for the establishment of Ottoman schools in Greece, followed by an archaeological and architectural study of the remaining models, and a study of the construction inscriptions that are still preserved. The study provides a serious publication of a number of construction inscriptions, the most important of which are the inscription of the establishment of the Osman Effendi School (1133 AH/1720-1721 AD) in Athens (Aten), and the inscription of the establishment of the Admiralai Haj Mehmed Agha School (1859-1858 AD) on the island of Mitilni (Medli). In the context of a new publication, the research paper studies a large number of endowment arguments for Ottoman buildings in Greece, including early documents in Arabic dating back to the 9th century AH/15th century AD, such as: the document for the endowment of the buildings of Haj Omar Bey bin Haj Turkhan, the document for the endowment of the Emir of Sanjak, Muhammad Bey bin Yaqub Bey, to cover the expenses and allocations of the employers and the beneficiaries of his buildings that he built in the locality of Bzou in the city of Qara Faria (Veria), and the document for the endowment of the buildings of Pasha in the city of Narde. (Arta) and Kefaloni Castle, Greece. And other late documents, such as the proof of the endowment of Wali al-Din Pasha over his school in the city of Yanniyah (Yaninna) and the proof of the endowment of Muhammad Ali Pasha in the city of Qawala (Kavala), issued by the Sharia Council in Mahroussa Egypt. The research paper also presents a documentary architectural study, most of which represents a new publication of the remaining Ottoman schools in Greece. Including making new architectural drawings for some schools, including: Admiral Khair ad-Din Barbosa School (first half of the 10th century AH/16 AD) on the island of Mytilene (Meddilli), Osman Efendi School (1133 AH/1720-1721 AD) in Athens (Aten), Ahmed Pasha Al-Daftardar School (before Rabi’ al-Akhir 1162 AH/March-April 1749 AD) in Kastoria (Kasriye), and a school Agha Pasha Mosque (Leonardo's Prison) (end of the 12th/18th century - beginning of the 13th century AH/19th century AD) in Nafplio (Annapoli), and the Vali al-Din Pasha Madrasah (1218-1219 AH/1803-1804 AD) in Yanni (Iannina). The study addresses the importance of the endowment system in building and operating Ottoman schools, detailing the school architecture, those in charge of teaching, students, workers, teaching curricula, teaching mechanism, teachers’ wages, student allocations, and the accompanying changes over the centuries in light of a new study of a number of endowment documents. The study ends with the most important research results and recommendations.
