Notes
Later leather binding - Part 1: Arabic introduction in rabbinic current script; 2nd part: Beautiful Spanish
Square script - The present parchment manuscript contains, among other things, an Arabic translation of the psalms
by Se'adyah Ga'on. "This codex consists of three parts: the third from sheet 88
an contains R. Solomon Jizhakis (Rashi's) commentary on the Psalms, Daniel, Esther
and the Song of Songs on parchment in almost extinct writing. The first part includes
the first 15 leaves, 3 of which are actual parchment, the others are ink parchment
are, and contains an Arabic introduction to the Psalms including an explanation of the
first 4 psalms in rabbinic current script. The author has edification
set goal, biblical criticism gains nothing from these pages. The beginning
is partly ruinous, the title completely unreadable. This breaks with the fourth Psalm
work off. At the end it says that this is a sample and instruction for
given practical use and now the second part begins, comprising 62 sheets.
It is in a font different from the first and third parts of the Ms., viz
written in the beautiful square Spanish script by one hand." [Aumer]
