The work was supposed to encompass 28 chapters (bāb), correspondingly to the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet, subdivided into 6 classes: al-aʿlām (personal name), al-nisba (place of birth and/or residence, or place of activity), al-kunyā (patrilinear, names with abū), al-abnā (filiation), al-nisā' (women) and al-ummahāt (matrilinear, names with umm).
