Notlar thick brown cardboard, covered with marbled paper with a pattern of moons and stripes — The writing is not appealing, but clear; Some little things in the usage remind of the Acehnese language. — black — paper — The poet narrates in artless words the distance from Aceh to Yiddah is three months (the sailing trip) and all Malay pilgrims find in Yiddah their "pilgrim's sheikh", which makes them comfortable traveling to and staying in Mecca; He names the sheikh for the pilgrims from Aceh. The first 19 pages contain the description of the holy city and the religious and cultural life there, as long as the pilgrims participate in it. On pp. 19-27 follows the ongoing description of the annual pilgrimage and associated festivities, e.g. the entry of the caravans from Syria and Egypt. S.27-33 list the virtues of Mecca, the holy places where miracles happen, where the prayer of the faithful is heard, and so on. On pp.33-41 there follows a presentation of the scientific life in Mecca and the lectures which the scholars hold after the five daily services in the mosque. The poet emphatically combats heresy here. Pp. 41-49 describe Medina, the Mosque of the Prophet, and other important places of Islam. He also relates the various events in Muhammad’s life during his time in Mecca and Medinah. P.49, Z.16 to the end, the author addresses his friends in his native Kampung (village), whom he has apparently left to trade. He informs them that he is now in North Sumatra but has little luck with the business. The letter may have the purpose of inducing his friends and relatives to send gifts, for the poet repeatedly appeals to them for pity. Finally, he directs pious exhortations to the daughter who stayed at home, where he often lingers in a dream. Malay Concordance Project: According to Suryadi: Being a short text of no more than 62 stanzas, Syair Sunur was often copied along with other short texts in a single manuscript or collection, most often with Syair Rukun Haji.   There are indeed 9 such manuscript copies, 8 in the Leiden University Library.   Beginning with Snackey's printed edition in 1888, there have been at least another 5 full or partial printed editions. The transliteration of Syair Sunur presented here is based upon the manuscript Schoeman V.41 in the Staatsbibliotheek Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin. This mauscript is the most complete of the fifteen known copies of Syair Sunur. It has no defective verses and is written in a rather clear and legible hand. As stated in its colophon, this manuscript was copied by a certain Muhammad Yahya ibnu Abdul Talab. It is highly likely that the copy was made to the order of a European (Dutchman?) given the Dutch in the colophon. The copying was finished on 30 Jumadilawal 1266 ‘te Padang’ coinciding with ‘13 April 1850’. Thus the copy is quite old, and dates from not long after the original manuscript must have been written by Syaikh Daud at Trumon.
