This rope is for carrying the book; a second rope is used to hold the book together Cover has come loose on one side — Southern Ta and non-standard Wa (as used by the Pakpak-Dairi Batak) are used — several illustrations, including some multi-page — brownish-black — bark — Very few Batak mss. contain folk tales, myths or legends and if so, they are usually not hold in narrative form, but reproduced in the form of incantations. This is the case also here. The entire ms. is dedicated to the creation myth of Batak (Voorhoeve 1927:65-6; 1958:242-244; Niessen 1985) of which several versions exist. The formation of the Earth is the work of the goddess Si Deang Parujar who is supposed to marry lizard-like Raja Odap-Odap, son of God Mangalabulan. Deang Parujar tries to escape the marriage by spinning and weaving on the moon as long as possible. She then uses the spun yarn to descend into the underworld where she hopes to find a place to hide. Mulajadi na Bolon, the creature God, who sees the unhappy Deang Parujar sends her a lump of earth. She tries to use the earth to create land in the ocean of the underworld, but her work is, again and again, destroyed by the dragon Naga Padoha. By deceiving Naga Padoha, she eventually succeeds to tie the dragon and to stab him with a sword running it through to the hilt. She then creates the middle world from the lump of earth. She settles down in the middle world, but longs for a companion. Unexpectedly, she meets Raja Odap-Odap and marries him. Through their descendants Si Deang Parujar is the divine ancestor of mankind. The dragon Naga Padoha, even though he is held by the sword in a stable position, still makes attempts to move. His movements cause the earth to shake. Whenever an earthquake happens, the Batak run out of their houses and shout suhul (hilt) to remind the dragon that he is still held by Si Deang Parujars sword and that his attempts to free himself are in vain. The bark book contains a number of beautiful illustrations. Outstanding because of its size is the illustration of two dragons of the underworld ocean. The creature on the right hand side in the following picture bears the honorific title Ompu Raja ni Aji Padua Tamba Tua (Grandfather Prince of Magical Arts, Lord of Increasing Luck) and we can presume that this creature is Naga Padoha from the creation legend. Naga Padoha is one of five snake- or dragon-like creatures that reside in the underworld ocean. Another is known as Naga Situldang Bosi, also known as Naga Situllang Bosi, Naga Si Pitu Tanduk, Basang Basuhi, or Ompu Mula Haranna (Vorhoeve 1958:243). This is the creature drawn to the left side of Ompu Raja ni Aji Padua Tamba Tua. Naga Situldang Bosi, also spelled Situllang Bosi, is said to inhabit the underworld (toding toru bona boni) and, just like Ompu Raja ni Aji Padua Tamba Tua, this creature is also said to increase the luck (tamba tua) of the sacrificial priests (datu porsanti) and the traveling priests (datu portandang). It is also said to be the origin of the magical arts. The two texts that accompany the illustration of the two dragons are transliterated in full (A18-19).
