Notlar	Red leather binding, spine badly damaged — Red leather binding, spine badly damaged — black, red — Arabic script → Nastaʽlīq — paper — Mirzā Jaʿfar ʿAlī, poetically surnamed Ḥasrat, was the son of Mirzā Abul Ḵẖair Ḵẖān of Delhi, who was a perfumer and druggist by profession. Ḥasrat also practiced the same profession till he became famous on account of his poetry and got access to the court of Shāh ʿAlam Bādshāh. Ḥasrat had himself witnessed the blinding of Shāh ʿAlam by G̲h̲ulām Qādir Rohīlā. Disheartened by the course of events, he left Delhi for Faiẓābād and joined the Court of Nawāb Shujaʿ-ud-Daulah. In 1195 A. H., after the transfer of the capital from Faiẓābād to Lucknow, Ḥasrat also moved there. Here, Qalandar Baḵẖsh Jurʾat, one of his favourite pupils joined him and both the teacher and the pupil dominated the Lucknow school of poetry throughout their life-time. After a successful career, Ḥasrat died in 1206 A. H./1791 A. D. and was buried at Lucknow. On the fly-leaf of the Dīwān we find the following note in Persian: جعفر علی حسرت تخلص ابوالخیر لکهنوی در زمره جهاندار شاه جاگزید - قلندر نجش جرأت از شاگردان اوست ( گلشن بیخار) فقیر آنرا در لکهنو دیده The Dīwān of Ḥasrat contains G̲h̲azals (foll, 1-146), Rubāʿīyāt (foll, 146b- 186), Mutafarriqāt (foll, 184-196), Muḵẖammas, Tarkīb-band, Tarjīʿ-band, Wāsoḵẖt (foll, 196-237b), Mas̤nawī (foll 238-248) and Qaṣsīdah (foll, 249-270).
