Notlar	black, red — Arabic script → Naskh — paper — An incomplete fragment of a biographical work on scholars and religious people from Damascus by al-Nuʿaymī. The author says in the introduction to al-ʿUnwān that it is an abridged version. Those who would like to delve into that which was said, might go back to his two works, Tabyīn fī al-ʿulamā' wa-al-ṣāliḥīn and Tadhkirat al-ikhwān bi-hawādith al-zamān. The present MS ends incompletely at f. 28b. On the folios there are numerous additions, mostly in the same hand as the text itself. Vollers conjectured that our text might be a first draft by the author, and the alterations and additions came from his son. Above all however, there are people listed on the last pages who died after the passing of al-Nuʿaymī. This presents the following problems: 1. The death year generally given for al-Nuʿaymī, 927/1521, is not correct. 2. The author is not al-Nuʿaymī, but his son. 3. The son expanded and added to al-ʿUnwān after the death of his father. In any event, it is doubtful that our text was written in the hand of al-Nuʿaymī.
