Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 996 Origin: Lacks dated scribal colophon ; paper etc suggests transcription in Egypt, perhaps first decade of the 20th century or shortly after. Some sections perhaps copied later. Eventually bound, likely in Egypt, for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 145 Binding: Boards covered in dark green cloth with dark green leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "شرح هياكل النور الاصفهانى | J.H.D." ; sewn in white thread over two recessed cords ; stuck-on endbands (blue and white stripe) ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Machine wove paper of at least a few types, as well as machine laid paper with watermark of "GOUVERNEMENT EGYPTIEN" with star and crescent at center and other smaller crescents with three stars (see pp.117-122, 131-136, etc. and compare Walz, "The Paper trade of Egypt and the Sudan," p.91), and wove ledger / grid paper (see pp.123-130). Decoration: Headings and keywords (often text being commented upon) rubricated ; otherwise text executed mainly in blue or black ink. Script: Naskh with influence of ruqʻah ; modern hand in a medium to bold line ; mainly serifless with effect of tilt to the left, very slight effect of words descending to baseline, free assimilation of letters, curvilinear descenders, open and closed counters, pointing in strokes or conjoined dots (occasionally oriented vertically), final yāʼ usually unpointed ; some sections in ruqʻah. Layout: Written in 13-16 lines per page.
