Tarih [1870-1905]
Notlar Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 948 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper, etc. would suggest transcription in Egypt, late 19th century (or possibly within the first decade of the 20th century). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 97 Binding: Boards covered in textured black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "التوحيد" ; sewn in white thread over three recessed cords, tightly bound ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Machine laid paper and wove paper ; mainly a type with roughly 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26-28 mm. apart (horizontal) and watermark of words in Arabic script only partially visible (see p.28, 40, 42, etc.) and date (see pp.48 and 60, possibly 1313 [1895 or 6] or 1292 [1876 or 7), light beige in color, virtually unburnished ; another type (see pp.3-6, 13-16) with roughly 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26-27 mm. apart (horizontal) and watermark of "GOUVERNEMENT EGYPTIEN" with star and crescent at center and other smaller crescents with three stars (see pp.4, 6, 14, 16 and compare Walz, "The Paper trade of Egypt and the Sudan," p.91), dense and sturdy, beige to buff in color, only lightly burnished ; final leaves of codex (from p.65 to close) are in a wove paper of nearly the same color as the predominant machine laid type. Decoration: Keywords rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of three dots in red. Script: Naskh ; large, clear though somewhat awkward hand in a medium to bold line ; partially but irregularly seriffed with slight right-sloping head-serifs, effect of tilt to the left, some sweeping descenders (often flattened), pointing in distinct dots, final yāʼ usually unpointed though kasrah supplied, fully vocalized. Layout: Written in 15-17 lines per page ; written area often divided to two columns ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board occasionally evident). Collation: i, V-1 (9), 3 V(39), III (45), i ; quinions (one anomalous) followed by a ternion ; final two leaves left blank ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (supplied during digitization). Title from inscription on 'title page' (p.1). Ms. codex. On upper pastedown label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory numbers, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No.7777" ; UM Library inscription on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; marginal glosses..
