Ms. 56 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.100, Risālat al-basmalah copied by Muḥammad ibn Memish [Muḥammad] ibn al-Ḥājjī Muḥammad ibn Ḥājjī ʻUthmān-zādah (Mehmet Memiş Osmanzade) with transcription ("qad jaffa al-qalam ʻan taswīd hādhihi al-nuskhah al-sharīfah...") completed roughly 21 Ṣafar 1221 [ca. 10 May 1806] (dating by fractions, reads: "في وقت الظهر من يوم السبت من العشر العاشر من العشر الاول من العشر الثالث من السدس الثاني من النصف الاول من العشر الاول من العشر الثاني من المائة الثالث بعد المائتين والالف من هجرة من له العزة والشرف ..."). As appears in colophon on p.246, transcription of al-Jurjānī's Taʻrīfāt completed in Karaman in the year 1116 [1704 or 5]. Paper suggests 18th or early 19th century for bulk of codex. Support: European laid paper of several types ; one type with 10-11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermarks including three hats and crossbow with 'M A' below ; another type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 22-24 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermarks including bull (trippant or statant guardant), man on a horse over ' C B G,' crown over 'G B T,' coat of arms, etc. ; some leaves only lightly burnished if at all. Decoration: Keywords (often marking sections) and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; some overlining in red ink ; illuminated diagram (namely, dāʼirat ʻAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) on p.253. Script: Naskh ; mainly a fine Ottoman hand ; mainly serifless ; effect of tilt to the left ; mainly open counters ; some elongation of horizontal strokes ; pointing in lines rather than distinct dots ; descenders mainly curvilinear ; rightward descenders tapered. Layout: Written mainly in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: 27 V(270), III (276) ; almost exclusively quinions ; numerous leaves left blank ; mainly lacks proper catchwords but last word of final line on the verso of each leaf is usually repeated at the beginning of the first line on the following recto ; catchwords present in Taʻrīfāt al-Jurjānī ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts, skips two pages each between pp.47-48, pp.103-104, and pp.449-450, and mistakenly repeats pp.86-87 twice).
