Notlar About: Fine copy of an odd fifth volume of Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Qasṭallānī's exhaustive commentary on the Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī, opening in Kitāb al-Maghāzī just before Bāb Ḥajj Abī Bakr bi-al-nās fī sanat tisʻ and ending abruptly in Kitāb Faḍāʼil al-Qurʼān, Bāb Taʻlīm al-ṣibyān al-Qurʼān. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 23 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper suggests 17th century. Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 56. Hadith (Traditions) of Kastallani." Binding: Both upper and lower covers lost, though spine remains intact ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; worked endbands in pink and lime green, intact ; overall in poor condition with covers lost, lifting and losses to spine leather, abrasion and staining of outermost leaves of textblock, etc. ; housed in box for protection. Support: European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 22 mm. apart (vertical), and crown star crescent watermark with 'A D' countermark ; thick and well-burnished to glossy ; some staining. Decoration: Section headings and text being commented upon (text of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī) rubricated (pp.362-367 lack rubrics) ; letters of section headings of elongated ; textual dividers in the form of red discs. Script: Naskh ; bold, clear likely Egyptian hand ; very slight effect of tilt to the left, occasionally more apparent ; mainly serifless though occasional right-sloping headserifs appear irregularly on free-standing alif, lām, etc. ; many open counters ; pointing in distinct dots, liberally spaced ; alif maqṣūrah pointed as yāʼ and often mardūdah ; descenders tending toward rectilinear ; rightward descenders tapered ; kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred, with even final kāf bearing shaqq ; occasional free assimilation of some letters ; partially vocalized. Layout: Written in 33 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
