About: Careful copy of a vast collection (majmūʻah) of assorted poems, including qaṣāʼid, muwashshaḥāt, etc. by various authors, most identified. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 945
Origin: Lacks dated colophon, though a birth notice for Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Zayn al-ʻĀbidīn al-Ghazzī al-ʻĀmirī (احمد بن محمد بن زين العابدين الغزي العامري) dated 24 Ramaḍān 1158 [October 1745] in Damascus as well as accompanying poetic excerpts (on the occasion of his birth) appears at close on pp.298-99 in what appears to be the second copyist's hand. Paper, hand, etc. certainly suggest a mid-18th century dating.
Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 94
Binding: Boards covered in black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "مجموعة ادب" ; now stab sewn in white thread ; stuck-on endbands in maroon cloth ; overall in fairly good condition.
Support: European laid paper ; mainly with 12 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 22-24 mm. apart (vertical), and watermark of grapes under crown and cartouche with heart and initials (see p.14, 20, 68, 106, 298), sturdy, well-burnished to glossy, dark cream to buff in color ; final leaf (perhaps originally served as flyleaf) in type with three crescent watermark (see p.304).
Script: Naskh ; at least two, clear though somewhat awkward Syrian hands ; opening hand serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, mainly open counters, pointing in distinct dots ; elsewhere a more angular hand with dramatic inclination to the right, more rectilinear descenders, still mainly serifless.
Layout: Highly varies, though roughly 12-21 lines per page, divided to two columns.
Collation: Gatherings virtually impossible to examine due to tight sewing ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes front flyleaf and skips two pages between pp.11-12).
Title from inscription on verso of front flyleaf (p.2).
Ms. codex.
On upper pastedown label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory numbers, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No.7768" ; UM Library inscription on p.5 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; marginal glosses.
