Notlar About: Clear copy of a large collection (majmūʻah / mecmua) of assorted excerpts from works of tafsīr and ḥadīth, including Tafsīr al-Bayḍāwī, Tafsīr Abī al-Layth al-Samarqandī, al-Fashnī's commentary on al-Nawawī's collection of ḥadīth, and what appears to be several excerpts from al-Baghawī's Maṣābīḥ al-sunnah and its commentaries. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 43 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.129, transcription of Tafsīr Abī al-Layth al-Samarqandī completed 15 Ṣafar 1132 [ca. 28 December 1719] ; paper in bulk of codex suggests 18th century. Accompanying materials: Slips (some tipped in) carrying glosses between pp.50-51, between pp.320-321 and between pp.338-339. Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 63. Religious tracts." Binding: Pasteboards covered in stamped textured paper (in shades of green and gold) with red leather over spine, foreedge flap and edges/turn-ins ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in laid paper ; sewn in (now soiled) cream thread, two stations ; worked endbands in yellow, intact ; overall in fair condition with some minor lifting and losses of paper and leather, staining, abrasion, moisture damage etc. Support: European laid paper of a few types ; mainly with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 20 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermark with crown above bar (carrying initials), likely over grapes ; another type with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), and three crescents (tre lune) watermark ; some staining ; leaves of a few of the latter quires are larger than those of the remainder of the textblock and have been folded to accommodate. Decoration: Keywords, section headings, abbrevation symbols and occasional notabilia rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of red discs ; occasional overlining in red and green. Script: Naskh ; several Turkish hands ; sporadically seriffed. Layout: Written in mainly 15, 19, 21 and 23 lines per page. Collation: III (6), 5 V(56), IV+1 (65), 8 V(145), I (147), III+1 (154), V (164), III (170), 3 V(200) ; middle of the quire marks in the form of circle or numeral khamsah ; catchwords present ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals appears in al-Majālis al-sanīyah ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing. Title supplied by cataloguer. Ms. composite codex. Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 63. Religious tracts." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "137" in Western numerals on recto of opening leaf (p.1) ; on paper pasted on p.15, a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا بشرط ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الذي بنيته في اتصال داري ان احتاجوا اشد الاحتياج بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم عفى عنه في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; oval seal impression on upper boardlining ; ocatagonal seal impression on lower board lining ; extensive marginal and interlinear glosses ; occasional corrections.
