Binding: Pasteboards covered in tan leather with dull red leather over spine and edges / turn-ins (possible repair / restoration treatment) ; Type III binding (without flap) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in green wove paper ; upper and lower covers carry central scalloped mandorla with traces of filigreé (now lost) on recessed paper onlays ; sewn in light blue thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in light blue and golden yellow, good condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with losses of onlays, some abrasion, staining, lifting of leather, etc. Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and single chains irregularly visible (horizontal), sturdy and well-burnished ; many leaves now guarded ; flyleaves in European wove paper. Decoration: Exquisite illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ ) at opening on p.2 consisting of rectangular piece with cartouche ending in scalloped domes carrying inscription (" الله ولا سواك [?]" ) in foliated Kufic surrounded by swirling arabesque (all in gold) and accented by red and blue dots flanked by delicated floral vegetal composition on lapis lazuli and bordered in gold, white and turquoise bands, surmounted by a row of elegant arabesque in white, gold, red, turquoise, etc. on a lapis lazuli ground, itself surmounted by vertical stalks (tīgh) in blue ; written area throughout surrounded by narrow gold frame defined by black fillets and outermost blue rule ; some keywords chrysographed, others rubricated or in blue ink ; occasional textual dividers in the form of gold discs. Script: Nastaʻlīq ; elegant hand ; serifless, with slight effect of words descending to baseline, closed counters, and elongated horizontal strokes, pointing somewhat inconsistent and occasionally unclear ; partially vocalized.
